Choosing A Collar For Your Dog
Posted on February 1st, 2013 in Comments Off
All dogs need a collar that includes an ID tag on it, but with hundreds of sizes, styles, colors and designs, choosing a collar for your pooch isn’t as simple as it used to be. There are a few considerations that you need to put into buying your dog a collar. When you do both you and your four-legged friend will be happy with the collar that has been purchased. How can you buy the right dog collar? Here are the tips you need.
Size Matters
Your dog should have a collar appropriately sized for his neck. In other words, don’t put a leather spike collar on your miniature poodle. They do not need the extra weight, plus it will look tacky. Choose a collar based on the size of your dog.
Before purchasing a collar, measure your dog’s neck while he is standing up. Insert two fingers into the measuring tape and the dog’s neck. If the fingers fit snugly and securely, this is the size collar your pooch needs. Keep in mind that most collars are adjustable, however, you should still get it as close in size to his neck as possible.
If you use Frontline to help treat and prevent flea but also want to add a flea collar you will need to add extra space between the measuring tape to accompany the collar. It is always a good idea to give your dog this extra bit of flea protection.
Material
Dog collars can be made from different materials. Nylon collars are popular. These collars can be washed and are very durable. You will find them in many different colors and styles to accommodate all dogs. Additionally you will find a nylon collar to be most affordable.
Leather collars are the most durable of all collars. They’re great for larger dogs with lots of strength. Braided leather is one of the most popular styles. Keep in mind you will spend more for leather though the protection is amazing.
Type
There are numerous types of collars as well. For instance, a choke collar is a special type of collar designed to choke the dog when the leash pulls it. These collars are designed to be used with dogs who are training. Pronged collars are another type of collar available, offering prongs all around the collar.
Style
You want your dog’s collar to be stylish and something that you like. Take the time to search the many different collars that are available and before you know it you will have the stylish collar for your furry friend.
